Public Health France reported that the number of Covid-19 cases has increased to 12%, with the virus's spread continuing to increase in the territory.
The latest data available as of June 12 showed that 12% of confirmed Covid-19 cases could have been reinfected. Between March 2, 2021, and June 12, 2022 possible reinfections accounted to 4.1% of all confirmed Covid-19 patients.
Public Health France defines a "reinfection" as an infection that is confirmed by a positive test and occurs at least 60 days following a primary infection.
Vincent Auvigne (epidemiciologist at Public Health France), stated that "the increase has been continuous ever since the arrival of Omicron wave" during a press conference. 93.5 percent of the reinfection cases that occurred since March 2021 had been confirmed to be "suspected Omicron variant".
The agency says that despite the fact that there are many reinfections with Omicron subvariants after first infections with Omicron (44%) of cases, "the likelihood of reinfection actually occurring after a second infection with Omicron (Alpha or Delta or any other variant) "remains significantly high."
Auvigne also stated that the likelihood of reinfection increases the further away the contamination occurs.
The circulation of Covid-19 increased in France during the week ending July 3. New hospitalizations and deaths rose sharply, mostly affecting the elderly, who are not sufficiently vaccinated. Public Health France also noted that the increase in Covid-19 cases was a result of the increased use of Covid-19 in France. Thursday night saw more than 154 600 new cases of Covid-19, with 17719 patients admitted, and 1,523 new admissions.
