Morocco: King Mohammed VI, cured of Covid-19, appears in public

According to state media, Morocco's King Mohammed VI took part in the Eid al-Adha rituals on Sunday. This was his first public appearance after recovering from Covid-19. The Eid Al-Adha prayer, the so-called festival marking the end the Haj in Mecca, was led by the 58-year-old monarch and Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan at the royal palace near Rabat.

According to the MAP news agency, the ceremony was held in a private setting with limited assistance in order to respect preventive measures taken to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to public television images, the "Commander for the Faithful" was dressed in a yellow djellaba and appeared to be emaciated, but smiled at the end. He was joined by his oldest son, Prince Moulay El Hashed (19) and his younger brother Prince Moulay Rachid (52).

Lahcen Belyamani, the sovereign's personal doctor, announced on June 16 that Mohammed VI had tested positive to Covid-19 in an asymptomatic condition. He recommended "a rest period for a few weeks." The sovereign continued to send speeches and formal messages on a regular basis during his convalescence.

According to Jeune Afrique weekly, the king from Morocco was infected with the virus in France. He had been there for a private visit on June 1st. Mohammed VI only had one foreign trip since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. That was to Gabon in December 2021.

The Alaouite monarch's health is a topic of great interest to Moroccans as well as those outside the borders of the kingdom. After a January 2018 intervention in Paris, he underwent heart surgery in Rabat at the royal palace.

Since July 1999, Mohammed VI, his father Hassan II, succeeded him, Mohammed VI, has ruled Morocco.
