Did you know that in the 15th century, the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz/Ciboure was one of the most important French ports? It was a popular place at that time, especially for whaling. The Basque fishermen became experts in tuna and sardines, making them France's leading tuna- and sardine port. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Ciboure and others organize the annual Tuna Festival to connect with their past. This gourmet event will take place on Saturday, July 9. The pots will be smoking in the fishing port. Delicious fish reigns supreme. Bandas parades will punctuate the day, as well as traditional toro de fumo at midnight.
This traditional festival, which is held in Macaye every August 25, aims to help you discover the industry of cheese. Cheese making is a popular activity in this village of 550 people. Around thirty farms are involved in producing milk from cows, goats, and sheep. This day will be a place for tasting, with demonstrations of unusual pairings and culinary demonstrations. Traditions will be honored with sheep shearing competitions and sheepdog trials! One of the highlights will be the race of shepherds.
This is Hendaye’s most important event this summer. The small squid can be enjoyed in any sauce during this gourmet and festive event. The recipes are great, whether they're fried, pan-fried or baked. The squid festival is held on July 13. It's an opportunity to learn that the famous Octopus inspires chefs to cook it in every way possible. The entertainment aspect of the festival will be provided by the Zarpai Banda as well as other performances.
