A major step on the way to Compostela, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port lives intensely all summer long. Perhaps even more on Mondays, when market day is celebrated. The weekly market is a vital part of daily life in the fortified city. And more exactly at the foot of the ramparts, where the market has been installed since the 18th century, leaving the forecourt of the Notre-Dame-du-Bout-du-Pont church for a more appropriate space. The vast covered hall was inaugurated by President Georges Pompidou in 1967. It has been a welcome refuge from the elements and has welcomed many local producers since then.
It is a joy to walk through the stalls that farmers from nearby villages sell their produce, eggs, and chickens under the oak frame. There are also artisanal apples. Craftsmen and producers are there to offer all things Basque, including Espelette pepper, Bayonne ham, Basque cake, or Irouleguy wine. Three days later, the Exhibitors return to the Hall for the Thursday of local artisans and producers (from June through September).
After you have filled your basket with quality products, the terrace at Le Chaudron bar-restaurant offers a pleasant stopover overlooking the covered market. The charming couple behind the bar and their caring team are very welcoming. We stop by for coffee or lunch to try the txuleta, a duck breast that has been grilled over the coals. The narrow streets of the village are ranked as one of the most beautiful in France. We will climb to the citadel, built on the site of an old medieval castle, if the shopping isn't too heavy. It was constructed in 17th century and enhanced by Vauban. This citadel offers a magnificent view of the valleys and vineyards of Irouleguy. We will be sampling the amazing terroir's products at the market.
